How to do colorwashing clouds on a ceiling, Part 1
by jean on May.01, 2006, under Painting Jobs
I’ve decided to start making a series of posts that talk specifically on the topic of daytime clouds murals. I am by no means an expert in this field but I have done a lot of research and have painted a handful of clouds mural with each one varying in techniques to know what has worked for me and what hasn’t!
Let me just preface this by saying that although clouds seem to be simplistic to do in the beginning per instructions you will find here and on the web, take care to properly follow safety precautions and guidelines plus use good judgement before attempting any home improvement project. If you can elicit the help of someone else, that is advisable. After all, two heads are better than one, right?
I’m not sure how this series will end up but the fun IS in the journey, come take a walk with me here. ![]()
I’d like to start by talking first about why to choose a ceiling mural as a way to improve the look and feel of a room.
Most people don’t give much thought to their ceilings except to paint it white or off white with ceiling flat paint. Being that I am in the ceiling mural business, I have spent a good bit of time laying on my back looking up to first and foremost, visualize what I can create on that canvas. The fact of the matter is that we as humans spend 1/3 of our lives in bed, according to studies I’ve heard. Between sleeping and whatever other activities people are doing in bed, it is no doubt that some of that time is plain “staring at an empty ceiling”.
A good number of people spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars each year to beautify their home in one way or another. Lavish furniture that wears in time and need replacing, ultra expensive flooring that require constant cleaning, walls that need repair and fresh paint to keep it looking new…all to improve the look and feel of your home so you can relax and enjoy it. Yes, ceiling murals can be very expensive for different levels of artistic works, however when you factor in the cost over time and the maintenance require to keep up with the other improvements, it is easy to see that the initial cost of a having a ceiling mural painted in your home is most likely the only cost you will encounter for a very long time in this arena…especially for the years of enjoyment you will get out of it!
It is always amazing to me how much of a difference a simple sky mural can change and improve the look of any room. I of course sleep under stars every night when I am at home. It is the coolest thing ever, there’s something so soothing about seeing those specks of glowing stars on my “interior sky” before drifting off. To me, it makes me feel less confined, like there is extra space above me….as if I had no ceiling at all! When I stay elsewhere and they have an empty plain boring ceiling, that is the first thing I notice laying in bed, trying to drift off to sleep, that there are NO stars! UGH! Believe me, if you’re facing that plain ceiling all your life, you have no idea what you’ve been missing! The stars are just happiness, it’s universal, who hasn’t seen a nightsky at one point or another and felt happy and connected? It’s like having a smile on your face everynight before falling asleep! ![]()
The same is true with daytime clouds themes. Day time clouds add such an openness to a room and it is lovely to see in the day or when your lights are on. When done right, it can add a level of elegance to your room decor and impress your house guests! Not to mention, it is whimsical for kids and just plain darn beautiful to look at! Who hasn’t enjoy a nice spring day like today where the sky is blue, the clouds are fluffy, and the birds are singing a sweet little tune. Actually, I am incorrect on that…I hear the birds and I see the blue but I just looked out my window and there isn’t a cloud in the sky.
bummer! This is even more of a reason to get your own clouds mural!
Most murals require no or very little maintenance to keep it looking like new. A light dusting maybe once every couple of months is all that’s needed…in fact, most people even forget to dust their ceilings! A ceiling mural will even distract guests from seeing the dust and cobwebs that inevitably forms in every household.
My starry mural in my bedroom has been glowing for 3 years and still is every bit as bright and beautiful as that very first day! Some have reported their murals being on year 12 and still is going strong with no diminishing effects of glow. With the clouds murals, the paints that are out there today do an amazing job on adhering and lasting through time. You don’t get much traffic or smudging on your ceilings unless you are super tall or you’re changing a lightbulb. Most ceilings don’t get direct sunlight so fading is not really a factor. The point I’m making here is that unless you paint over it, your day or night mural wll look great through the test of time, you’ll get so much enjoyment out of it for not a lot of money over time. That’s what I would call value and money well spent. ![]()
And yes, I may just be a little biased in my opinion but if you could see for yourself the joys of experiencing these murals, you will be a believer as well. Seeing IS believing in this case. Call me for a free demo, I’ll show you what you’ve been missing all along. ![]()
Hope that was a good informative start. The next part in this series, I would like to discuss paint and colors in relations to the area you wish to improve!
Until next time, be good to each other!
